About LLH

My name is Lisa Supper, I have lived in the Skye and Lochalsh area for 20 years, I am an Open University tutor and, most importantly, I am keen to learn new things! I am the founder member of LLH. However, this is very much a collaborative project. You will see a range of contributors throughout the website (and associated social media platforms). I am very grateful to the growing number of people who are contributing to, and are supportive of, the project.

A personal belief in the positive benefits of Lifelong Learning has led to connections with a wide range of like-minded people, and the creation of the Lifelong Learning Hub (LLH). The Hub is a non-monetized, entirely-free, community-focused, project.

As I mention within the ‘learner experiences’ tab, it is my view that our existing learning structures are rigid and outdated compared to many other countries, where lifelong learning cities are increasingly being established. Indeed, at the time of writing (August 2024), there are 79 countries that host UNESCO learning cities, and there are 356 cities, that have taken the pledge to become lifelong learning cities.

At LLH, we are passionate about the concept of Lifelong Learning and subscribe to UNESCO’s view that the creation of a culture of lifelong learning is ‘key to addressing many of the challenges faced by humanity’ (2020). As well as increasing employment opportunities, the ongoing acquisition of new knowledge and skills is connected to many positive outcomes. Indeed, lifelong learning is linked to personal growth, improved mental well-being, enhanced levels of confidence and greater social connection. On a wider level, a culture of lifelong learning has the potential to create positive and cohesive communities.

Through this website, a central directory of learning opportunities for Skye and Lochalsh is being developed. Useful information and ‘top tips’ are being collected and shared to support learners. Finally, opportunities for networking and social connection between learners will be made available. A key aim for LLH is to actively promote the joy of learning throughout life, and to bring people together who recognise themselves as lifelong learners.

At LLH, learning is seen as a resource for everyone, which is ‘life-long and life-wide’ (2020). Learning is understood in the very broadest sense. Therefore, LLH seeks to promote and support learning, which occurs within a wide range of formal and informal settings. Ultimately, LLH wishes to contribute to a ‘cultural shift’ (2020), where continuous learning is seen as the norm, and ongoing personal development is encouraged and celebrated.
