Embracing a Culture of Lifelong Learning
The Lifelong Learning Hub (Skye and Lochalsh) embraces the principles, which are set out within the document ‘Embracing a culture of lifelong learning’ .
In the autumn of 2020, UNESCO’s Institute for Lifelong Learning produced the above report, which concluded that (by 2050) ‘there must be a cultural shift and learning should be seen as a common resource for common good. Learning should be life-long (from birth to death) and life-wide. It should function in and out of the mainstream education system through the use of a broad range of teaching methods such as on-line, teacher-led, peer-led and inter-generational teaching. Lifelong learning should become an expectation for everyone – the ‘norm’ for everyone. Schools will prepare students for a life of learning’.
The report identifies the following objectives:
- Recognize the holistic character of lifelong learning
- Promote transdisciplinary research and intersectoral collaboration for lifelong learning
- Place vulnerable groups at the core of the lifelong learning agenda
- Establish lifelong learning as a common good
- Ensure greater and equitable access to learning technology
- Transform schools and universities into lifelong learning institutions
- Recognize and promote the collective dimension of learning
- Encourage and support local lifelong learning initiatives, including learning communities
- Reengineer and revitalize workplace learning
- Recognize lifelong learning as a human right
