Health and Wellbeing

Highland Mindfulness Group:

Mindfulness is a well validated scientific approach which can help with stress, anxiety, depression, isolation and chronic pain while supporting people to become more resilient.

The Highland Mindfulness Group was initially an informal group set up by former Drumnadrochit GP Dr Peter Wilkes some 15 years ago. The Group has since evolved and became a registered charity in 2020. It now draws on the skills of a team of 11 trained mindfulness facilitators.

Please contact HMG to discuss their next 8-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course , which takes place via Zoom. Also, they are planning a free beginners course for people with Long term health conditions .

Jean Dow BSc (Hons), BA (Hons), MSc:

Jean is a medical herbalist with more than 20 years of clinical experience, and more recently completed training as a functional medicine practitioner.

You may be unaware of the depth of training involved in being a medical herbalist and Jean feels it is important that patients, and workshop attendees, understand this so that they know they are in safe hands.  The study of Herbal Medicine is a four-year honours degree covering very similar subjects to that of a medical degree. This includes botany, plant pharmacology, biochemistry anatomy, physiology, pathology and differential diagnosis.

Jean has a vision, which is to see a system of health that focusses not just on the acute emergency care but on real preventative and integrative care.  Health is not just the absence of disease – but realising the full health potential of every person and nourishing and supporting this.

Contributing to the above, Jean offers regular workshops and tuition in a number of areas, including:

  • Boosting your immune system
  • Understanding herbs and remedies (what to stock up on)
  • Understanding supplements that are worth using

For further information about Jean’s work, and her workshops, please contact her at:

The Viewfield Garden Collective:

The Viewfield Garden Collective is a charity, which operates a therapeutic garden project in Portree. They support those:

  • with health & social care needs
  • experiencing mental health difficulties
  • experiencing social isolation and exclusion
  • from disadvantaged circumstances
  • living with long-term conditions

The Collective use horticulture, creative arts and the environment as a means to support and develop their volunteers and work to enable them to be better connected in the wider community and workplace.

The garden offers a supportive, safe and relaxed place to meet regularly, engage in meaningful activity, develop interests, skills and knowledge, and gain recognised qualifications. Additional benefits include developing positive intergenerational relationships, confidence, independence, self-esteem, fitness, planning skills, pride in one’s work and respect for others.
