A few words of Reassurance
If your current learning involves reading and study, do you:
· Feel guilty if you are not working?
· Feel you are cheating if you do not read a book from cover to cover?
· Worry if you cannot remember every details of what you have learnt?
· Worry that other people have taken far more notes than you?
The Study Skills Handbook (Cottrell, 2019, p. 102/103) identifies the above as virtuous, but ineffective, unhelpful thinking.
Consider the following:
· Working long hours with few breaks will impact negatively upon your ability to study and think clearly. So, schedule breaks and take them.
· When reading, remember it is ok to switch between focused, skim and scan reading. See: Reading Techniques – Lifelong Learning Hub (Skye and Lochalsh)
· Writing long and detailed notes may not be helpful. Consider short-cuts that work for you. See: Taking Notes – Lifelong Learning Hub (Skye and Lochalsh)
· Ultimately, be kind to yourself!
